Macedonian IT Market Declines for Second Consecutive Year in 2011 as Government and Telecom Cut IT Spending, Says IDC

Skopje/Zagreb, June 14, 2012 – Following a decline in 2010, the Macedonian IT market again fell in 2011, down 0.1% year on year in U.S. dollar terms to a value of $178.98 million. Measured in local currency, the market contracted 4.9% year on year. However, IDC expects the country's IT market to grow 1.5% year on year in 2012 and to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.8% to reach approximately $226 million in 2016. Macedonian per capita IT spending stood at $87 in 2011, or 9.1% of the EU average and well below the Adriatic regional average of $141.

"The IT market's second decline in a row reflects continuing cuts in government IT spending, as well as reduced investments in the telecom sector in 2011," says Boris Zitnik, managing director with IDC Adriatics. "Demand from the finance sector saw a modest rise, while the combined remainder of the private sector reported solid growth. Meanwhile, household IT consumption grew moderately compared to 2010."

The only two technologies that recorded an increase in 2011 (expressed in local currency) were personal computers and hardcopy peripherals (HCPs). In the case of PCs, this could be attributed to low base figures, while the HCP market was characterized by a shift to higher-priced devices. IT services spending dropped considerably, primarily reflecting the declining demand from the public sector vertical and the telecommunications sector.

"IT spending in Macedonia has been influenced by several external and internal factors, including the recession in the eurozone, a stable domestic currency policy, and a government investment plan that focuses on public construction," says Zitnik. "A true recovery in IT spending will only take place in the country when the negative factors begin to wane and the positive factors spur new growth.
